What is Happening

A meeting of the War Decorated Trust was held on Thursday at Chandigarh. The following Trustees were present:

  • Brig KS Chandpuri, MVC, VSM
  • Capt Reet MP Singh, VrC

Discussion centered around passing the audited accounts for the year 2012-2013 and the Scholarship Scheme of the Trust.

A small task group of the Western Fleet carried out an offensive sweep on the enemy coast off Karachi on the night of 4 December 1971. Notwithstanding the threat of enemy air, surface and submarine attack, Commander Kasargod Patnashetti Gopal Rao led his task group deep into enemy waters. Despite heavy gunfire from enemy destroyers, and at great risk to our ships and personnel, Commander Rao resolutely pressed home a determined attack, sinking two enemy destroyers and one minesweeper. After the surface engagement with enemy warships, Commander Rao successfully bombarded the port of Karachi, setting fire to oil and other installations in the harbour.

In this operation, Commander Gopal Rao displayed conspicuous gallantry and outstanding leadership in the best traditions of the Indian Navy.
