Citation:

On the night of 8 September 1965, Lance Havildar Naubat Ram, while leading his platoons attack on a hill feature a few mile south-east of Haji Pir Pass, was hit by a splinter and was wounded in the arm. His platoon came under accurate fire from an enemy light machine gun. He crawled and coming within a few yards of the gun, hurled a grenade into it and followed with his bayonet. Thus, single-handed, he captured the enemy light machine gun and killed the two gunners.

Again on 20 September Lance Havildar Naubat Ram silenced two enemy machine guns by throwing grenades and capturing them. Once again, he was hit by a machine gun burst. But undaunted, he refused to be evacuated. The enemy then counter-attacked but Lance Havildar Naubat Ram again went forward and threw grenades and foiled the enemy's attempt to gain any foothold. During this operation, Lance Havildar Naubat Ram was wounded three times, but refused to be evacuated. He fell down unconscious only after the enemy force had been driven away. Throughout the operation, Lance Havildar Naubat Ram displayed courage, leadership and devotion to duty of a high order in the best traditions of the Indian Army.
