Citation:

On 5 November 1948, Jemadar Bhagwan Das led a bold attack inside enemy held territory on a convoy of mules laden with rations n n for Kargil, drove off the enemy escort and captured 22 mules with rations. 

Again on 6 November 1948, Jemadar Bhagwan Das with his platoon volunteered to attack the enemy to clear the way for other troops to pass through to attack Padam. The enemy over 40 strong armed with steep hill and was so positioned that no movement within 100 yards could take place without his knowledge. 

Jemader Bhagwan Das led his platoon under cover to the foot of the hill. Under enemy fire from 150 yards below the enemy position he ordered a bayonet charge. Ahead of his men he led the attack with his 25 men by firing a light machine gun from hill. The attack was so bold and sudden that the enemy fled in complete disorder and the enemy position was captured. He pressed on the attack single-handed and killed six and wounded four.

Jemadar Bhagwan Des showed cold, calculated and inspiring courage by his gallant act and enabled the column to advance to its objective.
