On 16 December 1971, the task of clearing enemy defences in an area in the Eastern Sector was given to a battalion of Dogra regiment. In this attack, Major Surinder Singh Jamwal was commanding a company. He led his men under very heavy enemy artillery and small arms fire. After over-running a company of the enemy, he was confronted with yet another locality from where heavy volume of fire was coming. Unmindful of his reduced strength, he rallied his men and launched an attack on this locality. He over-ran this locality and also captured some Pakistani troops.

In this action, Major Surinder Singh Jamwal displayed gallantry and leadership of a high order.
