Citation:

On 20 October 1962, the Chinese launched an attack on one of our company positions in NEFA. Subedar Bhab Bahadur Katwal, who was commanding the company, held on to his position although wounded by automatic fire. He withdrew from the position only when ordered to do so, the position having become untenable. The next day, Subedar Katwal with 15 men went to Tsangdhar. The position was in Chinese hands. Seeing a Chinese medium machine gun post firing at people trying to cross a pass, Subedar Katwal put in an attack on the Tsangdhar post in an endeavour to put the gun out of action. He and his men have since been missing.

The courage and devotion to duty displayed by Subedar Katwal inspired his men.
