On 5th / 6th July 1999, Subedar Tashi Chhepal was tasked to lead a column in an attack on Dog Hill in the Batalik sector of Jammu and Kashmir. He successfully led the column on the steep cliff under heavy enemy fire even during daylight and cleared the enemy opposition. His column not only killed two enemy soldiers in hand-to-hand fight but also recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition.
Despite being hit by enemy fire, Naib Subedar Tashi Chhepal kept firing on the enemy till they withdrew from the location leaving behind their dead as well as arms and ammunition. Displaying outstanding example of leadership he refused to be evacuated from the place of action and prevented the enemy from interfering with progress of attack. His action resulted in depleting the resistance of enemy and assisted own troops in capturing the objective. He thus displayed leadership and gallantry beyond the all of duty in fighting the enemy.
