Flight Lieutenant Vishwanath Prakash formed a part of the Air Force helicopter team of the Indian peacekeeping Force in Sri Lanka. On the night of 11 October 1987, he was the leader of a four aircraft formation involved in a critical special heliborne operation. Despite being junior in service and relatively inexperienced, he showed determination and grit of a very high order, He successfully carried out three missions during the night amidst heavy firing by the militants on the helipad. Though his helicopter suffered extensive damage due to firing, he managed to fly it back to the base safely

Flight Lieutenant vishwanath Prakash thus showed exceptional courage in the face of the militant's ground fire.
